Exploring the World of AI and Academic Writing: Insights from Nagoya Writing Conference
Our GDP Discovery Writing Service team recently went on a two-day business trip to Nagoya with a dual purpose: to recruit prospective students and to participate in a writing symposium at Nagoya University. GDP mentor and Associate Professor, Aubra Bulin, led current writing tutors, Yumi and Vien, on an exciting recruitment mission at two schools. On our first day, we visited NUCB International Junior and Senior High School and Kamiyama Gakuin Japanese Language School. Our aim was to ignite interest and spread awareness about the Discovery Program. It was our first business trip in Japan, and let’s just say, it was an experience to remember!
On the second day, joined by our other writing team instructor, Professor Adam Brod, we dived into the dynamic domain of academic writing and artificial intelligence at Nagoya University! We were treated to an insightful keynote talk followed by a revolutionary potential of Large Language Models (LLMs) in education, setting the stage for an intellectually stimulating day ahead.
We had an array of discussions in several sessions throughout the day, ranging from the strengths and weaknesses of Generative AI to Automated Writing Evaluation & LLMs, sparking engaging discussions among attendees. Our very own Junko Otoshi from Okayama University presented a captivating study on the Analysis of Automated Writing Evaluation in EFL Classrooms, engaging in conversations on the ecological perspective of teaching writing.
The afternoon sessions were nothing short of exhilarating, with topics ranging from the ethics of LLMs to collaborative learning at the Academic Writing Support Desk. As the day drew to a close, Professor David Barker from Gifu University treated us to a thought-provoking featured talk on “AI and the Future of Writing,” leaving us inspired and eager to embrace the evolving role of AI in academia and the endless possibilities AI brings to the table.
As we reflect on our whirlwind workshop adventure, one thing is clear: the future of academic writing is bright, bold, and brimming with possibilities. From harnessing the power of AI to fostering collaborative learning communities, we’re on the brink of a transformative era in education. Our writing team returns with a bounty of takeaways from this experience.
