Japanese Government (MEXT) Full Scholarship for Students from ASEAN or African countries:  October 2025 Admission

The Discovery Program for Global Learners will select several successful applicants from ASEAN or African countries who are successfully accepted through International Admissions for October 2025 and meet the eligibility, and academic record with outstanding screening results.

October 2025 (April 2025 intake is not eligible)

One-time admission fee
Tuition fees
Monthly living allowance (117,000 yen per month)
Airfare to and from Japan (only at the beginning and the end of the 4-year undergraduate program)

  • 4. Eligibility

An applicant must:
・Be prepared to enroll in the program if they are accepted.
・Be a national of an ASEAN or African country (Note: Japanese citizens with dual nationality are not eligible).
・Be successfully accepted through International Admissions for October 2025 (Note: April 2025 intake is not eligible).
・Have been born on or after April 2, 2000.
・Not currently enrolled in other universities in Japan as an international student.
・Not enroll in other universities in Japan as an international student, starting from October 2025.
・Not have received a scholarship from the Japanese government previously.
・Not receive other scholarships from the Japanese government, starting from October 2025.
・Have passed the CEFR B2 level (for *all* components) in English or the JLPT N2 level in Japanese.
・Have the willingness to contribute to promoting mutual understanding and friendly relations between Japan and the applicant’s country during university and after graduation.

  • 5. Academic Record

・A GPA of 2.30 or higher at the time of application
・Maintain a GPA of 2.30 or higher upon enrollment
・The scholarship will be suspended if the GPA falls below 2.30.

GPA calculation method
・Applicants should calculate their own GPA at the time of their final academic year or the current academic record, according to the calculation method described below.
Firstly, applicants should determine ‘Assessment Point’ based on the table shown below, and then calculate by applying the formula indicated in the table below.

(Note 1) If a credit system is not used for the lectures/classes registered, the number of completed subjects will be calculated instead.
(Note 2) Grades not listed in the table above should be excluded from this calculation.

  • 6. Selection Process

The MEXT full scholarship recipients will be selected from the top successful applicants, based on their performance in the International Admissions.

  • 7. Questions to be asked during the screening process

On the application form for International Admissions, you will be asked to indicate your interest in receiving a scholarship by answering the following question.

Question:

“If available, do you wish to receive a scholarship (MEXT Scholarship, JASSO Scholarship, Discovery Scholarship, etc.)?”

If you select “YES” to this question and are from an ASEAN or African country, you may be asked during your admission interview to describe your plan for community activities in Japan to promote mutual understanding between your country and Japan.

Please be prepared to answer the following question:

“What community activities do you plan to engage in outside of the university (in Japan) during your time at Okayama University and after graduation to enhance mutual understanding and friendship between people in your country and Japan?”

  • 8. Notification of Selection Results

The selected applicants will be notified of their results by e-mail after the announcement of their International Admissions results.
If selected applicants have not replied by the deadline specified in the e-mail, the selected applicants will be considered to have declined the offer.

  • 9. Final Confirmation by the Discovery Program for Global Learners

An online interview for final confirmation may be conducted if International Admission and the screening of this call are passed.
The selected applicants will be notified by a separate email if an online interview is to be conducted. If no notification is made, the interview will not be conducted.

  • 10. Final Approval by the MEXT

The university will advance the names and applications of the applicants to the MEXT for final approval.
