“The Inaugural Symposium of the Discovery Program for Global Learners at Okayama University ―Nurturing Talents for Global Citizenship: Possibilities and Challenges of Liberal Arts Programs in Research Universities” Held

Okayama University’s newest program, the Discovery Program for Global Learners, held “The Inaugural Symposium of the Discovery Program for Global Learners at Okayama University ―Nurturing Talents for Global Citizenship: Possibilities and Challenges of Liberal Arts Programs in Research Universities” on February 28.

The event drew approximately 200 attendants including the concerned officials, the general public and local residents. Presentations and panel discussions generated lively discussion on the globalization of universities and possibilities for expanding undergraduate programs offered in English.

Prior to the symposium, Okayama University President Kiyoshi Morita gave an opening address, followed by a guest speech by Ms. Keiko Momii, Chief of Office for Student Exhange, Student Support and Exchange Division, Higher Education Bureau, Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) -Japan as well. The Symposium started after an overview by Executive Director/Vice-President Masaru Araki.

The first part of the symposium included presentations on examples of the internationalization of undergraduate education in the United States, Europe and Japan by invited guests from Japan and abroad. The second half included a presentation on the Discovery Program and a panel discussion in English on the launch of the Discovery Program. Participants included guest speakers Drs. Fried J.M. Keesen, (Director of Education, University College Utrecht), Dr. Stephanie R. deLuse (Principal Honors Faculty Fellow in Barrett, The Honors College, Arizona State University), Dr. Yujin Yaguchi (Professor and Director, Center for International Exchange, Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, the University of Tokyo) and Dr. Kelly J. Hansen (Professor and Academic English Advisor, Discovery Program for Global Learners at Okayama University).

The symposium came to a successful conclusion with closing comments by Executive Director/Vice President Nam-ho Huh.
